In Australia it is ANZAC day, when we remember the Australian and New Zealander soldiers who fought in any wars, together. It also marks the first landing of the ANZACS at Gallipoli in WWI.
The original floral symbol was rosemary, as this apparently grew wild on the hills at Gallipoli. Rosemary does not flower at this time of the year, so it was a sprig.
The poppy, the universal flower of remembrance, is also worn, now.
