We were walking through a small park, on a popular trail to the shops, when we were arrested by a paradox.

The ants, very common around here, were clustered around the nest opening , going nowhere. Were they receiving their marching orders? Watching an internal spectacle?
A return trip 3 days later revealed no change, while nearby nests were as active as usual. Most puzzling.
So strange, mass suicide through lack of breath?

I have no idea. Even the thought of being in an ants’ nest gives me the willies.
